Jim Stock and Mike Tiano of The Haw River Wine Man are really good at finding bargains. They are the same ones who found the Bidoli Sauvignon Blanc, our last Case of the Month, and we sold close to 50 cases in a month. The 2014 Mannara Primitivo is another of their finds, and it can be summed up with one word — AWESOME! Hailing from the warm and sunny region of Puglia, in the heel of Italy’s boot, Primitivo is the Italian name for Zinfandel. Offering up loads of ripe fruit, moderate complexity, and surprisingly long finish, the only thing it lacks is the “superficiality” typically found in wines in this price range. It’s just good, and you should buy some!
Puglia is sunny and warm and responsible for some of Italy’s greatest red wine values. Mannara Primitivo qualifies in my book as an extreme value and it truly demonstrates its warm and sunny place of origin. Fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel, the wine shows a deep, almost purple color in the glass. The bouquet is overt and obvious with notes of warm blueberry, dried blackberry, fig, and zesty herb leading into a soft and juicy palate of dark fruit, smoky sage, dark chocolate and spice. All of that for just $6.99/bottle? Yep!
Even better, the wine is not at all sweet or artificial tasting like so many in this price range. I’ve enjoyed this wine with classic “Amer-Italian” dishes like eggplant parm, baked ziti, and spaghetti and meatballs, but I’ve also enjoyed many bottles with nothing more than a glass and a good friend. It’s not overly flashy or flamboyant, but it’s also far from boring and mundane.
Still not sure? Join us Friday, January 13th any time between 4-7pm and try it at our Free on Fridays Wine Tasting. At less than $7/bottle, I don’t know what more you could ask for. Stop by the store or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org to make sure you get some of this one today! Happy drinking and happy eating in Asheville, NC this winter.
