The 2017 Vina Cobos Felino Cabernet Sauvignon is the Cab deal of the year, perhaps of all time.
I can’t think of a better sub-$20, New World Cabernet Sauvignon I’ve tasted………ever.
2017 Vina Cobos ‘Felino’ Cabernet Sauvignon
Paul Hobbs is one of the most skilled winemakers in the world. Known for producing exceptional Napa Cabs that are far from cheap, Mr. Hobbs also has an operation in Argentina called Vina Cobos. It is here that he and his incredible team make some of the greatest wine values in the world.
I enjoyed this one Saturday night with a steak, and Lynn and I both agreed that it drank like a $50+ Napa Cab! Offering incredible quality to price ratio, this one soars out of the glass with classic Cab notes of black currant, cherry, dried Mission fig, dark chocolate, and spice. Broad, rich, and finely textured, as it gets air, those aromas and flavors expand and intensify.
I was absolutely floored by the class and pedigree of this wine. And I suspect the low price is attributed to the fact that Hobbs and his partners Andrea Marchiori and Luis Barraud purchased their vineyards in 1999. This was before Argentina’s wine scene blew up and just before vineyard/land prices went up. Whatever the case, this is a TON of wine for the money.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about the famed Marchiori Vineyard. It is, without a doubt, the best vineyard in Argentina and one of the best in the world. Located in the legendary Lujan de Cuyo section of Mendoza, it is home to some of the greatest, highest scoring Argentinian wines of all time. And much of the fruit that goes into this bottle of wine comes from this hallowed ground.
This truly is the dream team of North and South American wine personalities. Farmed with great care and attention to detail by Andrea Marchiori, whose family has owned the site for many years, winemaking is handled by Paul Hobbs and Andrea’s highly talented husband Luis Barraud. And the finished product is everything I’ve said and more. It’s Paul Hobbs Cab at less than $20, I love it, the critics love it, and you’re gonna’ love it.
