New Case of the Month Selection — 2014 Domaine Duffour Cotes de Gascogne — On Sale for as low as $8.49/bottle through Tuesday, May 10th!!! Let me start by saying that this wine, in my humble opinion and to my palate, is one of the best white wine values in the store, in Western North Carolina, and in the world! The white wines of Gascogne in Southwestern France have long been heralded as some of the best deals in the world, and I think the version from Michel Duffour is the best of these values. Based on a blend of old vine Colombard, Gros Manseng, and Ugni Blanc, this is the perfect crunchy, crisp, tart and refreshing white wine for spring and summer sipping. If you like dry, fresh and crisp white wines like Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo, you’re going to love this! It’s our new Case of the Month, and here’s the deal:
2014 Domaine Duffour Cotes de Gascogne – $10.99/bottle regular price – a great deal already!
Sale Price: $8.49/bottle by the case — that’s over 20% off!!
I invite you all to stop by this Saturday, April 16th any time between 2 and 5 pm to give this one a try. You can also just stop by and pick some up or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with your order. Before I get ahead of myself, let me tell you a little bit more about the wine and the family that makes it. Gascogne is famous for foie gras and Armagnac, but it is also home to an eclectic and interesting assortment of grapes. Farmer and winemaker Michel Duffour took over his family’s estate in the 1980’s. He replanted many of the vineyards, but he kept some of the older Colombard and Ugni Blanc plots that his father had planted in the 1960’s to make Armagnac. Michel still makes incredible Armagnac, but he also crafts his white wine from these old vines. Older vines lead to more intensely flavored grapes and results in bolder aromatics and more concentrated flavors — that’s exactly what you get here!
Like most of the white wines of Gascogne, this one is fermented entirely in stainless steel to preserve freshness and purity of fruit. Upon pouring it, I can literally smell this wine from almost 5 feet away! Intense aromas of green apple, citrus and green herbs flow out of the glass leading into a palate of super crisp, tart and tangy melon, grapefruit, exotic tropical fruits and citrus zest. Somewhat resembling a really good New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, but with a little more weight and texture, I really don’t know what more you could ask for in a wine that sells for less than $10. Perfect for drinking liberally on warm spring and summer days and ideal for serving with fresh fish, vegetables, and salads, this is the quintessential spring/summer white wine.
The wine is in ample supply, but being that it is already one of our top sellers, that could change quickly. Stop by and pick some up, take home and chill, open the bottle and enjoy it on the porch or patio with friends and/or fresh flavors. Cheers and happy drinking and eating in Asheville!
