2011 Michel Gassier Cotes du Rhone Villages Visan Cercius

2011 Michel Gassier Cotes du Rhone Villages Visan Cercius

This is a wine that almost everyone likes, and I promise you I’m not exaggerating. We started working with the Cercius with the 2010 vintage, and we continued on successfully with the 2011.  Out of the 100 or so cases we sold over the course of those two vintages, I can count on one hand the number of people who didn’t care for the wine.  We’ve been out of the wine for several months now, and people keep asking when it’s coming back in.  Well, it’s back and it’s our Wine of the Week!

Michel Gassier and his wife Tina farm vineyards in the village of Visan, on the right bank of the Rhone River.  It is here where the legendary Mistral winds of Provence sweep over the vines.  The Latin name for these winds is Cercius, and they play a rather large role in the style of this wine. These stiff winds help to keep the vines and the grapes dry, and when you combine that with the fact that the vineyards are situated at close to 1,200 feet in elevation (it’s cooler up here), you’re already off to a good start.  And when you “sprinkle in” the helping hand of Philippe Cambie (one of the Rhone’s leading consultants) and Eric Solomon (a great importer and marketer of fine wines), you have the perfect recipe for making great wine.

The 2011 Michel Gassier Cotes du Rhone Cercius is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah, and all of the grapes come from 80+ year old, organically farmed vineyards.  This is not a light, peppery, bistro styled Cotes du Rhone at all.  Instead, it’s a big, luscious, full bodied fruit and spice bomb!  Boasting aromas and flavors of kirsch, baked blueberry, currant jam, pepper, anise and licorice, this deeply colored, full bodied red is opulent, decadent and hedonistic.  It tastes great with braised dishes (beef or lamb stew), grilled meats, or barbecue, but it by no means needs food.  For fans of riper styled reds, you really need to do yourself a favor and get some of this one!

The weather is going to turn cooler before we know it, and this wine is like a warm blanket on a cold night.  Stop by and pick some up, call us at 828.505.8588 or email us and we’ll set some aside for you as long as you pick it up within a week. Cheers and happy drinking and eating!
