Free on Fridays Wine Tasting - The Sweeter Side of Wine

Friday, February 10th from 4-7pm — Get your weekend off to a good start with Asheville’s best free wine tasting. Join us as we delve into the sweeter side of wine. Just because it’s sweet doesn’t mean it’s not good!

Some of the greatest wines in the world are sweet. That is a fact! German Riesling, French Sauternes, and Portuguese Port are some of the best wines and most long lived wines on the plantet, yet many wine drinkers find sweeter styled wines to be inferior. Join us this Friday at Table Wine in South Asheville (click here for directions) for a sampling of some sweet, yet balanced wines. To start, we’ll pour you a classically styled German Riesling that balances mild sweetness with searing acidity. Up next, it’s our new Case of the Month Selection, a Sangiovese-based red blend from Tuscany. It’s actually not sweet, but it is laced with super ripe and rich notes of red fruits (think cherry pie, raspberry jam, etc.) and spices — we suspect this will become a new customer favorite. To finish, we’ll pour you a splash of Brachetto, a rare treat from Italy’s Piemonte region. Stop by, taste with an open mind, learn and save big on all of the tasting wines.

Can’t make it by, but want to place an order? Just email us at josh@tablewineasheville.com.

1. 2015 Urban “Nik Weis Selection” Riesling (Mosel, Germany): Nik Weis, the proprietor and winemaker at St. Urbanshof estate (one of the greats of the Mosel), makes this wine with fruit he purchases from friends and neighbors. A perfect introduction to Mosel Riesling, this one balances sweetness with tartness, offering up lovely notes of mineral infused tangerine, grapefruit, and green apple. 90 points Wine Enthusiast

2. 2015 Ser Passo Barbanera Toscana Rosso (Tuscany, Italy)This is brand new to the United States, it’s our new Case of the Month, and it’s delicious! There isn’t much information online for this one, but we know it’s mainly Sangiovese with smaller bits of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Like I said in the intro, this is not actually sweet, but it is sumptuous and super ripe. For fans of lower tannin, bigger fruited wines, this is your new jam!

3. 2015 Cantina Sant’Evasio Brachetto d’Acqui (Piemonte, Italy) – Brachetto is one of Italy’s great dessert wines, and it is produced in Acqui in Italy’s Piemonte zone. Awarded DOCG status in 1996, it is absolutely delicious. Low in alcohol, a bit fizzy, overtly sweet, and flowing with aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry, strawberry and rose petal, this is one to stock up on for Valentine’s Day. Try it with a plate of fresh fruit and some dark chocolate.
