The Wines
1. 2014 Villa Wolf Pinot Gris (Pfalz, Germany) – The warmer Pfalz region of Germany borders France’s Alsace to the west. This aspect of the vineyards results in richer, fuller expressions of wine much like those found across the border. Villa Wolf’s Pinot Gris offers up ample body and texture, a touch of spritz, and just a hint of sweetness. Flavors of ripe peach, pear, flowers and mineral permeate this incredible Pinot Gris value that reminds us of good Oregon Pinot Gris at a fraction of the price.
2. 2013 EVIL Cabernet Sauvignon (Aragon, Spain) – This wine comes to us from the same team behind the Precious Syrah. Importer Dan Philips and winemaker Chris Ringland have crafted a fun and playful riff on Cabernet Sauvignon that pokes a little bit of fun at those that think that alcohol is the devil’s work. Pure, medium bodied, and packed with ripe cherry, peppery currant and spicy aniseed, this low tannin, easy drinking Cab is great with or without food.
3. 2012 Baron La Rose Bordeaux “Vieilles Vignes” (Bordeaux, France) – Yes, there are still incredible values to be found in Bordeaux and this is one of them. A blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc from vineyards that are all 30+ years of age, it sees 8 months of aging in French oak. Full bodied, rich, round and silky, this offers unbelievable complexity and flavor concentration for the price.
