Caparsa is the Chianti producer everyone’s talking about. Brought to us by importer Jay Murrie of Piedmont Wine Imports, Caparsa crafts tiny amounts of traditional, soulful, compelling Chiantis. These land at the store this Wednesday, January 8th.
Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media recently reviewed the estate’s wines for the first time. He scored their Chianti Classico Riserva at 96 points and their “regular” Chianti Classico at 93 points. And after tasting these recently with Jay, I can confirm that these scores are more than warranted. Needless to say, supply is super limited on these and once they’re sold out, I won’t be able to get more until the next vintage is released.
2016 Caparsa Chianti Classico Riserva ‘Caparsino | 96 points Antonio Galloni – Vinous Media

Let me start with Galloni’s review as it’s spot-on. He absolutely loved this wine! “Aromatic, silky and also plush, the 2016 is fabulous. Mint, pine, lavender, espresso and macerated dark cherry all open up in the glass, but more than anything else, the 2016 is a wine that gracefully marries power with richness. The 2016 is a total knock-out. Don’t miss it. Drink 2020 – 2036.”
Yep, this was one of this highest rated Chiantis of the vintage and every other 96+ point rated 2016 Chianti would cost you $100+. If you love classic and traditional Italian red wine, this will truly make your head spin. It is Sangiovese at its finest and it is one of the best expressions of the grape I’ve ever tasted.
Equally compelling and one of the greatest Chianti values this palate has every experienced is Caparsa’s Chianti Classico. Also from the 2016 vintage, one of the best vintages of the 21st century in the region, this just oozes Tuscan character and personality. It’s Caparsa’s first vintage of this wine — what a way to start out!

Galloni raved about this one too. “Beautifully perfumed and layered, the 2016 possesses tons of nuance as well as character. Black cherry, plum, leather, spice and menthol are some of the many nuances that develop in a deep, flavorful Chianti Classico that is simply compelling. The tannins could use time to soften, but readers are frankly going to have a hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine. Drink now – 2030.”
The Caparsa story is one of passion, commitment to quality and respect for the land. Started by Paolo Cainferoni in 1982, the estate is certified organic and home to some very old Sangiovese vines. Based in Radda in Chianti, the heart of Tuscany, Paolo produces about 20,000 bottles (less than 2,000 cases) of wine per year. That’s not a lot of wine…
Paolo’s farming and winemaking practices are healthy and labor intensive. He uses no chemicals in his vineyards, all grapes are hand harvested and sorted, fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, and wines are bottled unfiltered and with minimal sulfur additions. This commitment to farming cleanly and letting nature make his wines has obviously paid off.
I could go on and on, but I think you get it. These are fantastic wines, the prices are more than fair, and they are guaranteed to please many palates. Paolo says, “It is a wine for wine lovers, with great complexity and strong emotions. It is too much for some people. It represents, more than the other wines, the terroir.” Yep…
Stop by the store or use the contact form below to place your order. To receive sale pricing, wine must be picked up and paid for no later than January 25th. Cheers to happy drinking and eating in Asheville.
