Celebrating Red Zinfandel, The All American Grape

Wine down your work week and get your week-end off to a good start with Asheville’s Best Wine Tasting every Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. This week, we’re “Celebrating Red Zinfandel,” one of our favorite cool weather reds. Boisterous, spicy and rich, it is often referred to as the “All American Grape,” as there is more of it produced in California these days than anywhere else in the world. You’re invited to stop by, taste, learn and save this Friday.

We’ll start with the 2012 Edmeades Zinfandel from one of Mendocino County’s pioneering producers. Dense and rustic, but super charming, this one offers up ripe notes of dark cherry, raspberry, dried herb and fresh earth. Riper, jammier and spicier, the 2011 Ancient Peaks Zin comes from the Margarita Vineyard in Paso Robles. Smoky, baked cherry, raspberry jam and peppery, spicy notes all make show up in this delicious wine. Next up, the 2012 Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel comes from 50+ year old vineyards in Lodi. We challenge you not to like this dense, purple colored, thermonuclear fruit bomb. And after that, the 2012 Fiddletown Old Vine Zinfandel is made with fruit from 80+ year old vines in Amador County. Thick, rich, unctuous and a total pleasure bomb of a wine, it coats the palate with jammy blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, vanilla and toasty oak nuances. To finish up, the 2012 Brochelle Zinfandel is simply delicious. Full bodied, silky smooth, and opulent, this one flows with aromas and flavors of blueberry and blackberry jam, white pepper, and smoky, toasty oak. Stop by and help us celebrate the “All-American Grape” this Friday — it’s your patriotic duty.
