Free on Fridays Wine Tasting – Delicious Domestic Wines

Free on Fridays Wine Tasting this Friday, June 3rd from 4 to 7 p.m. showcasing some new and delicious domestic wines!  Trust me folks, you don’t want to miss this tasting as we will pull the corks on some really great new wines from California.  We’ll start with a “Rombauer lookalike” at a fraction of the price — translated, that means a rich, creamy and buttery Chardonnay.  Next up, it’s a stellar and fuller styled Pinot Noir from California’s Russian River Valley that doesn’t break the bank.  We’ll finish up with a new Cabernet Franc/Gamay blend from El Dorado County that tastes like it came straight out of France’s Loire Valley.  Stop by, taste, learn and save up to 20% off on all of the tasting wines.

All of the featured tasting wines are on sale the day of the tasting: take 10% off if you mix any 3, 15% off if you mix any 6, or 20% off if you mix any 12.

The Wines

1. 2014 Custard Chardonnay (Sonoma Valley, California) – The name pretty much sums it up!  From a single vineyard owned by the Sebastiani family located in Carneros, this Chardonnay gets the “full treatment.”  Barrel fermented, full malolactic, and aged in French oak for 6 months, the resulting wine is super rich, creamy and toasty, finishing with a strong note of vanilla bean.  Rombauer lovers will love this one!
Tasting Price: $16.19 in mixed 3-packs | $15.29 in mixed six packs | $14.39 in mixed cases

2. 2014 Hook and Ladder Pinot Noir  (Russian River Valley, California) – Vintage 2014 has been proclaimed as the greatest Pinot Noir vintage California has every experienced.  Marked by warm and dry conditions, grapes got maximum hang time with litte or no adverse weather conditions.  The resulting crop provided for incredible Pinots and this is one of the top values of the vintage.  Rich, silky and laced with ripe red fruits, spices, and soft tannin, this will please many palates.
Tasting Price: $20.69 on mixed 3-packs | $19.54 on mixed 6-packs | $18.39 on mixed cases

3. 2012 Bebame Red Wine (El Dorado County, California) – I am a bit smitten with this new wine made by veteran Steve Edmunds from the rugged vineyards of El Dorado County.  Bebame means “drink me” in Spanish, and this blend of Cabernet Franc (93%) and Gamay (7%) is all about pure, clean and easy flavors.  For fans of French wines like Beaujolais and Chinon, this might be your new jam.  Enjoy!
Tasting Price: $19.79 in mixed 3-packs | $18.69 in mixed six packs | $17.59 in mixed cases

Marietta Old Vine Lot #62

Marietta Old Vine Lot #62

Wine of the Weeks – The best red wine value in California for as low as $11.99/bottle!!!  Yep, I’ve done it again folks — I’ve worked a deal to get what Robert Parker called “one of the finest value-priced wines in the United States” to you at the best price in Western North Carolina.  For almost 40 years, Marietta Old Vine has been providing discriminating palates with pure drinking pleasure, and the current release (Lot #62) might be the best effort ever from this family run winery.  Perfect for casual sipping without food, but even better with pretty much anything off the grill, this Zinfandel-based red blend is our new Wine of the Weeks.  Here’s the deal:

Marietta Old Vine Lot #62 — On Sale Through Tuesday, April 12th

Regular Price: $15.99/bottle

Sale Price: $13.99/bottle, $12.50/bottle on solid 6-packs, or $11.99/bottle on solid cases!!!!

Parker wasn’t the only one who loved the Marietta Old Vine Lot #62, Wine Spectator gave it 90 points and named it a “Smart Buy” and Antonio Galloni called it “one of the very best California wines readers will find for the money.”  Ben, David and myself are in total agreement with the wine critics, and we invite you to stop by this Saturday, April 1st (2-5 pm) to give it a try.  An old school field blend based primarily on Zinfandel with smaller amounts of Carignane, Syrah, Petite Sirah and a few Italian varietals, this is about as honest and real as wine gets.

Founded in 1979 by Chris Bilbro and inspired by his Aunt Marietta’s good home cooking, hard work, and honesty, Marietta Cellars continues to be a family run affair.  These days, Chris’s two sons Jake and Scott run the operation with same passion as their father.  For many years, all of the grapes for Marietta’s Old Vine was purchased from various grape growers, but today the family owns over 400 acres scattered throughout Sonoma and Mendocino Counties.  With such vast acreage under their watch, the Bilbros are able to select the best fruit each year to maintain consistency and quality in this wine.

So what’s this Marietta Old Vine like?  It pours a deep and dark color and the nose is ripe, rustic, spicy and hearty — it always reminds me a bit of a really good Southern Italian red (think Salice Salentino or Primitivo).  With an array of dark berry flavors along with a healthy dose of black pepper and roasted herb, the wine is full bodied but opulent, smooth in texture, and easy to drink.  Like I said before, this is a wine that drinks just fine without food, but do yourself a favor and try it with your favorite barbecue — chicken, pork, or beef.  You’ll thank me!

So there you go, California’s greatest red wine value at the best price in the region!  We just picked up 10 cases and we’re ready for you to come and get it.  Like I said before, we’ll be pouring it this Saturday, April 2nd from 2-5 pm with a couple of other “Perfect Grillmates.”  Stop by then or just trust me and stop by the store before April 13th to save big!  If you can’t make it by this week, I’m glad to hold your wine through the end of the sale period — just email me at josh@tablewineasheville.com and let me know how much you would like.  Cheers and happy drinking and eating in Asheville!

2012 Hill Family Barrel Blend

2012 Hill Family Barrel Blend

Wine of the Weeks – A Napa Valley Red Blend that will make your head spin!!!  This wine is straight up sexy — if the major wine writers can use that lingo, so can I!  This is one of those wines that combines super rich, full and flamboyant flavors with a creamy and velvety texture.  Perfect for sipping without food, it’s also a prime candidate for filet mignon or pretty much any sort of meat off the grill.  It’s the 2012 Hill Family Barrel Blend and it is our new Wine of the Weeks.  It’s on sale for the next 2 weeks and here’s the deal:

2012 Hill Family Barrel Blend – On Sale Through Tuesday, March 8th

Regular Price: $24.99/bottle

Sale Price: $21.99/bottle on 3-packs or $19.99/bottle on 6-packs or more

After three decades of farming grapes for some of Napa Valley’s finest wine producers, Doug Hill and his family decided that their family should enter the wine business.  In a very short period of time, they’ve risen the ranks and their current releases have garnered some great praise from a number of wine writers.  Robert Parker said the “2012 Proprietary Red is rich, dense and full-bodied with dark plum, blackcurrant and blueberry-like fruit. It’s elegant, pure, full-bodied with velvety texture and sweet tannin. Drinkable now, this wine should continue to offer delicious consumption for 5-7 years.”  Good call Bob!

The wine is a collaboration between professional surfer Kenny Knox (thus the name) and Hill Family.  It is a wild blend of 65% Merlot, 9% Syrah, 9% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Cab Sauvignon, 4% Zinfandel & 3% Petit Sirah aged for 14 months in French (90%) and American oak (10%).  Deeply colored, nearly opaque, the wine explodes out of the glass with aromas of warm, ripe, dark summer berries, mocha, vanilla and spice box leading into a supple and sumptuous palate of similar flavors.  Soft in tannin, but huge in flavor, this will make some heads spin!

If you’re not sure about this one, just stop by the store this Friday, February 26th any time between 4:00 and 7:00 to give it a sniff and a sip.  Otherwise, email me at josh@tablewineasheville.com to place your order or stop by the store and pick some up.  I’ll be glad to hold your wine for up to 2 weeks.  Cheers and happy drinking and eating in Asheville!

Smith Story Wine Cellars

Free Wine Tasting featuring new releases from Sonoma County’s Smith Story Wine Cellars – Saturday, February 27th from 2:00 to 5:00 – Trust us, you do not want to miss this tasting!  The wines from Smith Story Wine Cellars were some of the best I tried on my recent trip to the wine country, and we’ll have winery founder/owner Alison Smith in the house pouring and talking about the newest releases from this rising star producer.

Ali and Eric sniffing and tasting in the cellar.

Ali and Eric sniffing and tasting in the cellar.

Ali and her husband Eric Story are industry veterans and two of the nicest people in the biz.  They started their winery in 2013 and winemaking is handled by Ross Cobb (Cobb Wines, former winemaker at Hirsch and Flowers) and Katy Larue (Larue Wines), two of California’s most gifted winemakers. Grapes are sourced from carefully selected, cool climate vineyards scattered throughout Sonoma County, Anderson Valley, and the Rheingau (Germany), and the resulting wines are pristine, pure, and beautifully detailed.  Case productions are tiny, but Ali made sure we got our fair share.  Stop by, taste, meet the winery owner, learn and save up to 20% off on all of the featured tasting wines.

All of the featured tasting wines are on sale the day of the tasting: take 10% off if you mix any 3, 15% off if you mix any 6, or 20% off if you mix any 12.

The Wines

1. 2014 Sauvignon Blanc (Sonoma Mountain) – This is destined to become one of California’s benchmark Sauvignon Blancs.   Antonio Galloni says it “is made in a fresh, reductive style that shows the brighter, stonier side of Sauvignon. Even with all of its freshness, the Sauvignon shows plenty of depth and an attractive element of phenolic weight that adds complexity.”  We agree wholeheartedly!  Vinous Media 89 points
Tasting Price: $22.49 on mixed 3-packs | $21.24 on mixed 6-packs | $19.99 on mixed cases

2. 2014 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) – One of our favorite wine writers/reviewers is Antonio Galloni, and flipped for these wines.  “The 2014 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast ) is an attractive, appealing wine. Orchard fruit, gentle apricot, spice and almond notes meld together in an effortless, gracious white that hits all the right notes. This is a gorgeous Sonoma Coast Chardonnay to drink over the next handful of years.” Vinous Media 91 points
Tasting Price: $40.49 on mixed 3-packs | $38.24 on mixed 6-packs | $35.99 on mixed cases

3. 2014 Riesling (Rheingau, Germany) – Ali and Eric are crazy about German Rieslings and they work with a very famous producer to craft this wine.  Pretty much dry and packed with pure Riesling “snap, crackle and pop,” style, this one loves sunny days and back porches along with spicy Asian cuisine.  Yum!
Tasting Price: $22.49 on mixed 3-packs | $21.24 on mixed 6-packs | $19.99 on mixed cases

4. 2014 Pinot Noir “Helluva Vineyard” (Anderson Valley) – With Ross Cobb and Katie Larue working together to craft this wine, there is no way it could be bad.  And it isn’t, it’s great!   “The more finessed side of Anderson Valley comes through in the 2014 Pinot Noir Helluva Vineyard. Bright, floral and lifted, the 2014 offers lovely understated punch in its bright red fruit. The 2014 was done with fully destemmed fruit, which helps bring the fruit forward.” Vinous Media 93 points
Tasting Price: $46.79 on mixed 3-packs | $44.19 on mixed 6-packs | $41.59 on mixed cases

Free on Fridays Wine Tasting – Big, Rich Wines from Orin Swift and The Prisoner Wine Company – Friday, December 11th from 4-7 p.m. – Robert Parker says “Dave Phinney may well be 2015’s winemaker of the year for this wine taster.”  Phinney is the man behind the Orin Swift brand, and he makes big, rich, flamboyant wines that grab your attention.  He is still consulting for The Prisoner Wine Company (which he sold in 2009), but the wines under this label are currently made by the talented Jen Beloz (formerly of Ravenswood).  When you add it all up, both Phinney and Beloz craft wines that people just love to drink.  We invite you to stop by for a free wine tasting this Friday to see if you love drinking them.  Stop by, taste, learn, and save on some delicious, highly rated wines from Orin Swift and The Prisoner Wine Company!

This full-throttle wine is completely different and more individualistic than anything I’ve ever tasted. It is a magnificent, full-throttle, exuberant dry white to drink over the next 3-4 years.” – Robert Parker – 96 points
Special One Day Tasting Price: $29.99/bottle best price

2. 2013 The Prisoner Wine Company Cuttings Red Wine (Napa Valley, California) – “The 2013 Proprietary Red Blend Cuttings is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine, but blended with some Petite Sirah and Syrah as well as a touch of Zinfandel. This is outstanding wine, and there are 5,000 cases of it. The Cabernet comes from top sites such as the Inkgrade Vineyard that Les Behrens made well-known. The wine offers plenty of blackberry and cassis fruit as well as some licorice, truffle, and lead pencil shavings. It is full-bodied, again very opulent (a hallmark of all of the wines from The Prisoner) and finishes authoritatively. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.” – Robert Parker – 91+ points

2012 Neyers Cabernet Sauvignon Neyers Ranch

Wine of the Week – 2012 Neyers Cabernet Sauvignon Neyers Ranch

Wine of the Week – A 93 Point Rated Napa Cabernet Deal – We bought it all!!!  I’ve got two words for you on this one……..BUY IT!  Trust me, it’s not going to last long.  We bought all 7 cases that our Western North Carolina distributor got, and we’re already down to about 5 cases.  With that warning out of the way, let’s continue.  The nearly perfect 2012 Napa vintage has yielded a bevy of beautiful, open, ripe, and opulent Cabernet Sauvignons and this is one of the best deals out there.  The 2012 Neyers Cabernet Sauvignon Neyers Ranch is truly magnificent and it’s our Wine of the Week.  Here’s the deal:

2012 Neyers Cabernet Sauvignon “Neyers Ranch-Conn Valley”
On sale through Tuesday, November 24th

Regular Price: $54.99/bottle

Sale Price: $46.99/bottle (over 10% off) or $43.99/bottle on 3-packs (20% off)

Bruce Neyers is one of the hardest working guys in the business.  In addition to owning a vineyard and running a winery, he is also the National Sales Manager for Kermit Lynch Imports.  I’m not sure how he finds time to do it all, but I am 100% sure that he does a fantastic job in both of these roles.  Bruce’s long years of working with small, artisanal domaines and estates of France definitely informs his philosophy at Neyers.

This wine comes from Bruce’s Neyers Ranch Vineyard in Napa’s Conn Valley.  Located in the hills just east of St. Helena, this vineyard supports Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and since 1998 has been farmed organically and sustainably.  The vineyards are overseen by David Abreu, one of the great viticulturists in the world, and these Cabernet vines are now over 20 years old.  As Bruce says, they are “just entering the ‘Sweet Spot’ of their productive years.”  Yep, these hard working vines are in a great zone, and Neyers says that he “think(s) it’s the finest wine we’ve made from the grapes grown on our property.”

We agree and so does James Laube of Wine Spectator who awarded the wine 93 points.  That’s a great score, but I find it a touch conservative — I’d easily put this one at 95+ points!  Deep and opaque in color, the wine smells like heaven upon popping and pouring a glass.  Notes of cassis, dark cherry, cedar, and spicy oak flow out of the glass leading into a sumptuous, supple palate or ripe dark berries, spice box, cigar tobacco, licorice, and chocolate.  Laube says to drink through 2028, but I wouldn’t wait that long.  It’s simply fabulous right now!!!

Like meat?  So does this wine.  I enjoyed with lamb chops last night and it made for a great pairing.  It would be equally awesome with any sort of other grilled meat, but be sure to enjoy a glass without food as well.  There’s just under 5 cases of this wine to sell, and there’s no more to get — needless to say, I doubt it will make it through the sale period.  To place your order, simply email me at josh@tablewineasheville.com or stop by the store.  Happy drinking and eating in Asheville!

The small and humble Mazzocco Winery is based in Healdsburg, in the heart of Sonoma County, and they make a bunch of good wines in small batches.  Their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are both delicious, but it’s their Zinfandels that really stand out.  With Thanksgiving coming up, Red Zin is the perfect red wine to compliment your turkey, stuffing, and sweet potatoes.  Or of course, you can skip the food altogether and just enjoy Mazzocco’s wines in a big glass with good friends.  Stop by, taste, learn, and save on all of the featured selections in this free wine tasting.

Remember, all of the tasting wines are on sale the day of the tasting.  Save 10% off by the bottle, 15% off if you mix six of them, or 20% off if you mix twelve or more of them!

The Wines
Prices range from $19 to $50

1. 2013 Mazzocco Chardonnay (Alexander Valley) – This is just classic Alexander Valley Chardonnay.  Vibrant flavors of honeysuckle, Asian pear and tangerine lead the way to Meyer lemon, passion fruit, and vanilla bean notes in the mouth. This delightfully crisp Chardonnay finishes with tropical fruit, key lime with hints of French oak.
Tasting Price: $17.99/bottle | $16.99 in mixed 6-packs | $15.99 in mixed cases

2. 2012 Mazzocco Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley) – Mazzocco makes close to 25 different Zinfandels from different vineyard sources.  This is their entry level Zin, but it does not behave like an entry level anything!  Full bodied and boasting a nose of ripe and warm raspberry, blueberry, spice and chocolate, it hits the palate with a rush of ripe fruit and brambly spice.  Trust us folks, this outclasses many Zins that sell for a lot more.
Tasting Price: $22.49/bottle | $21.24 in mixed 6-packs | $19.99 in mixed cases

3. 2012 Mazzocco Cabernet Sauvignon (Dry Creek Valley) – Mazzocco’s Cab comes from choice vineyard sites scattered throughout the Dry Creek Valley.  Perfectly balanced, it exhibits perfectly ripened berry fruit, vanilla, chocolate, and exotic spice on the nose and palate.  Full bodied, but supple in texture, this would make for a great cocktail Cab.
Tasting Price: $22.49/bottle | $21.24 in mixed 6-packs | $19.99 in mixed cases

4. 2012 Mazzocco Zinfandel “Warm Spring” (Dry Creek Valley) –  This is where we get serious!  This tiny production Zinfandel is loaded with flavor and bravado.  Pure raspberry, chocolate covered cherry, cinnamon and other Indian spices all burst out of the glass leading into a soft, supple, and decadent palate.  For fans of big, rich, jammy Zins, you really don’t want to miss this!
Tasting Price: $35.99/bottle | $33.99 in mixed 6-packs | $31.99 in mixed cases

5. 2012 Mazzocco Zinfandel “Pony” (Dry Creek Valley) – Josh says this is probably the best Zinfandel he’s tasted all year!  Talk about a wine that balances rich and fat with acidity and structure — this one does a marvelous job at that.  Plump, juicy, and opulent, this one breathes of raspberry and blackberry jam along with notions of pepper and exotic spices.  On the palate, it coats every inch of flavor perception.  One word: AWESOME!
