Case of the Month - 2013 Antonio Sanguineti Cannonau di Sardegna

Case of the Month - 2013 Antonio Sanguineti Cannonau di Sardegna

SOLD OUT! Our top wine find of the year huh? That’s a bold statement, but it’s one that we stand behind 100%.

Yeah, there are some doctors out there that say Cannonau is the secret to living forever, but we say drink it because it tastes great! Known as Grenache or Garnacha in other parts of the world, this tiny production wine reminds us of past winners like the Cercius Cotes du Rhone and the Verso Salento Rosso.

Sanguineti Cannonau

2013 Antonio Sanguineti Cannonau di Sardegna

Rich, robust, and concentrated Italian Grenache!

SOLD OUT

Cannonau is one of Sardegna’s leading red varietals, and it is noted for being potent, rustic, and packed with resveratrol, the substance that some researchers say can improve heart health. We think that’s all fine and dandy, but we didn’t buy this wine because we thought it would make us live longer. We bought it because it’s delicious and full of heart, soul, and character.

Tuscan born Antonio Sanguineti was born in Tuscany, and his family lost their vineyards when he was a young boy. Luckily for us, the winemaking bug never left his blood, and today Antonio is revered throughout the country as a great winemaker and consultant. For his own wines, he sources fruit from “friends,” and makes small amounts of wines in a very simple, hands off fashion which allows the wines to be sold at very modest prices. This Cannonau is his newest project, and we believe it will end up being his most successful.

Just under 1,000 cases were produced and the wine is made with grapes from older vineyards scattered throughout the eastern portion of Sardinia. Fermentation and aging occur with native yeasts in a mixture of stainless steel and used oak barrels to preserve purity and freshness.

The resulting wine pours a lovely, medium to deep shade of purple and the nose is packed with ripe cherry, boysenberry, plum, and pomegranate along with some earthy/spicy nuances. On the palate, the wine is medium to full bodied, plump, juicy, and pliant with flavors of warm berries, pepper, herbs, and a slight note of smoky mocha. If that doesn’t sound good to you, we can’t be friends any more!
