2023 Gitton Pere et Fils 'Les Montachins' Sancerre

Sensational Sancerre: 2023 Gitton Pere et Fils Les Montachins

There is a scintillating new Sancerre in the house (and the US), and it comes from a producer with a pristine reputation throughout France and Western Europe. For proof of that, check out this article from Jamie Goode's Wine Anorak, a blog and publication I have the deepest respect for. Pretty soon, Gitton's wines will garner the same admiration in Asheville as they do in Europe. Seriously fantastic!

Gitton is the stuff of legends, and if you do a bit of research online, you'll see their wines are often compared to those from Dagueneau, one of the Loire Valley's most mythical producers. The only difference is that Gitton's wines are actually attainable, and they sell for about half the price as those from Dagueneau.

Gitton's Les Montachins Sancerre is a picture-perfect version of this famed, Sauvignon Blanc-based, Loire Valley white.

Sancerre Lovers Unite! This is the "good stuff!"

When we tasted this a month or so back, we were totally floored. To us, this is a new "standard-bearer" in terms of the Sancerres we stock. From an old parcel of Sauvignon Blanc planted on Portlandian limestone (chalk), it exudes that classic and intense nerve and minerality I look for in all world-class Sancerres.

Fermented in tank and aged on the lees for 6 months, this old vine cuvee snaps, crackles, and pops with energy, power, and concentration. Totally delicious now, Gitton's wines (like Dagueneau's) age impeccably well. I bought 6 for myself, and I'll drink 3 in the coming months, but I'm going to stash 3 away for "examination" three to five years down the road.

When you get this in your glass, you'll see why Gitton's wines are so beloved in their home country. Their Les Montachins just lights up the senses with aromas and flavors of intense mineral, ripe citrus, Bosc pear, lime zest, and more. Once you get it on your palate, you'll feel the deep concentration and power of this wine, and you'll fully realize that it is in a league with other Sancerre all-stars like Vacheron, Crochet, et al.

When I tell you all to keep drinking the good stuff, it's wines like this I'm talking about :) I'm very proud to stock this small family estate's wine(s), and I look forward to future vintages from the Gittons. I also can't wait to enjoy this with trout in a butter, white wine, and caper sauce. I recommend you do the same!
