Twelfth generation vigneron Louis Gatinois sells a portion of his crop to the Grande Marques, specifically Bollinger, but with each passing year he is bottling more and more for the family’s label.
The current release is sensational! Golden colored, almost orange in the glass, this offers up classic Ay notes of dark cherry, poached pear, orange peel, brioche, and mineral. It is a glorious glass of wine.

While this comes to you at a great price, it's actually a very serious bottle of bubbles. Champagne Gatinois is based in the village of Ay, home to some of the most coveted Pinot Noir in the entire region. Most of their Pinot holdings are comprised of massale selection Petite Pinot d’Ay: a small-yielding, tiny berried clone that is unique to this village.
Add to the equation the limestone-rich soils of Ay and long aging on the lees (36 months, twice what is required by law), and you have the makings of a very complete and complex Champagne. A blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, this possesses incredible depth of fruit and a mineral backbone that makes for contemplative drinking.
Lynn and I had a bottle this past Saturday, and we were both blown away....and we drink a lot of Champagne! I love the color of this wine, I love the inviting nose, and I love the way it flows with richness and freshness on the palate. Drinking like a much more expensive Champagne (think Bollinger), Gatinois' Brut Tradition is a formidable wine from this rising star producer.
