2021 Dave Phinney 'Our Lady of Guadalupe' Pinot Noir

2021 Dave Phinney Our Lady of Guadalupe Pinot Noir

Dave Phinney is a living legend. This is the guy who was the creator and original winemaker of The Prisoner Red Blend as well as all the wines under the Orin Swift label. In case you didn't know, he sold both labels for about $500 million! He took that money and reinvested it in 2015, purchasing a Pinot Noir vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills called Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Today, I present you with the debut vintage of Phinney's 'OLG' Pinot Noir, and I'm offering it up at the best price in the country. Feel free to fact check me on that statement, but the lowest price(s) I can find online is $79.99, and I'm seeing it for as much as $99.99. I'm going to absolutely crush that price, and I'm only offering this up to my top clients.

I tasted the wine yesterday, and it's fantastic, like 95-96 points fantastic. Rich, textured, and opulent, it's a Phinney-made wine all the way. This is Pinot Noir with some serious "meat on the bone," and it's already snagged a big score from Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media. I think that's pretty accurate and in-line with what I tasted....see both of our tasting notes below.

This is the ONLY wine Dave makes from a vineyard he owns. He's got a lot riding on this one, as he controls and oversees everything, from vineyard to bottle. All I can say is that his talents are on full display here. This is a very stylish wine from a guy who knows what he's doing and who knows how to make wines that everyone loves.

Phinney loves him some crazy, freaky labels, and I often wonder if he might have been under the influence of substances other than wine when he created them :) Whatever the case, it's not just a delicious wine, it's one handsome and eye-catching label too. To make things even more interesting, there are six different labels. Buy a sixer, and you'll get all of them!

Enough rambling, what's this stuff like? It pours a deep ruby, nearly opaque color, and the first whiffs are of framboise, dark cherry, pomegranate, hibiscus, rose petal, cedar, and brown spices. Soft, silky, and composed on the palate, it's rather full-bodied for a Pinot, but it remains light on its fee due to the juicy acidity that is present. Finishing long, smooth, and complex, this is really tasty stuff y'all!

Just in case you need another opinion, here's what Galloni (my favorite wine critic) had to say: “The 2021 Pinot Noir Our Lady of Guadalupe is a rich, textured wine. Red/purplish fruit is super primary in its first impression. Rose petal, cedar and cinnamon are some of the notes that fill out the layers with a bit of coaxing. Readers will find an opulent, juicy wine, very much in keeping with Dave Phinneyʼs style. Aging is 13 months in French oak, 54% new. This is a terrific showing from Phinneyʼs new OLG label. Drink 2024 - 2033.”

Need I say more? I  could, but I won't because I think you all get the point :) I hope you get some!
