Alla Costiera Prosecco 2018

Best Prosecco on the Planet: 2022 Alla Costiera Extra-Dry

Not all Prosecco is created equally. When you taste the version from Alla Costiera, I think you’ll agree that this is one of the best Proseccos on the planet.

Always vintage-dated, from certified organic vineyards, and made in tiny batches, this smells so good! It also has much finer bubbles than most Proseccos, and it tastes just as good as it smells.

Being that this sells for less than that mega-produced, blue-labeled "stuff" they sell at big box stores, it's also a fantastic value. Keep reading or skip the read and get your order in!

I’ll be honest, I don’t drink a ton of Prosecco. I’m more of a Champagne, Cava, and Crémant guy, but I’ll drink Alla Costiera any day. I still remember the first time I tasted this one with Jay Murrie of Piedmont Wine Imports. It was revelatory!

The bubbles were finer and less frothy, the bouquet was intense with notes of white fruits and fresh flowers, and the mouthfeel was smoother and creamier. As with all great wines, it’s the fine details that matter. Alla Costiera founder, farmer, and winemaker Filippo Gamba farms organically, a rarity in the region, and Filippo was one of the first to convert all of his vineyards over.

In addition, his Glera vines (the Prosecco grape) are some of the oldest in the region. Whereas bigger Prosecco operations will produce their wines in 250,000 to 500,000 bottle batches, Filippo makes just 2,500 bottles at a time. Small production does not always guarantee quality, but it does in this case, and this is exactly the kind of wine that I like to champion.

Importer Jay Murrie sums it up better than I can. “Filippo Gamba is a no-nonsense farmer. Back when nearly nobody cared about natural viticulture in Veneto, he transformed Alla Costiera into a scrupulously organic and low-intervention estate. After nearly two decades in charge of this successful small family domaine, Filippo is still thinking and acting like a young visionary winemaker, like he has something to prove.” Well said Jay, and I promise you you'll taste it in this wine.

You can certainly taste every ounce of Filippo’s passion and hard work in this wine. Carefully remove the cork, pour yourself a glass, and you will be greeted by pristine aromas of peach, pear, apple, citrus, and spring flowers. Take a sip, and you’ll taste the difference. There’s a perfect balance between ripe and round orchard fruits and higher toned citrus fruits that just keeps you coming back for sip after sip.

If you want a delicious, value-priced bubbly to toast the holidays with, this is the ticket.
