This is without a doubt one of the best Cabernet Sauvignon values in the world right now, and it’s our Wine of the Week! I’ve had the privilege to follow the progress at Finca Sophenia since the wines were first brought into the United States in 2005. I could taste in those early vintages that the wines were already very good and fairly priced, but I knew that as their vineyards got older and they fine tuned their winemaking that the wines would just get better. I was right, and nine years later, their wines are better than ever, and the 2013 Finca Sophenia Altosur Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best value Cabernet Sauvignons I’ve tasted in my 16+ year career.
Founded in 1997 by industry veteran Roberto Luka, Finca Sophenia got started the right way. When I say the “right way,” it means he started his winery with plenty of money in the bank. He and his team planted their vineyards on prime real estate (sandy, rocky, well drained soils) in the high altitude Tupungato region with select French clones. Furthermore, Roberto installed a state of the art winemaking facility and he hired famed Bordeaux consultant Michel Rolland to coach his winemaking team. All of this careful planning and investment has helped propel the winery to greatness.
It’s not just us that think the wines are great, many of the leading wine critics and periodicals agree with us. The crazy is the fact that Luka’s Altosur line (Altosur means “High in the South) is his entry level label! The Wine Spectator rated the wine 90 points and said it was “a juicy and lush red, with a bright savory note to the red currant, raspberry, and black licorice flavors. Complex and briary accents linger on the supple and creamy finish. Drink now through 2018.” In addition to the great press from The Wine Spectator, The Wine Advocate (aka Robert Parker) rated the wine 89 points and said “it shows character and has something to say.” We don’t always agree with these guys, but we’re in complete and total harmony on this one. This is no “fluke rating,” and this is no simple wine. It drinks as well as or better than many wines that cost $20+! Add to that the fact that you can drink the wine now and/or over the next 3 to 4 years……..this is a total no brainer.
It would be a great deal at $13/bottle (Wine Spectator’s Suggested Retail), but at less than $10/bottle, this rates in our book as an insane value. This is a wine to buy by the case and to drink and enjoy whenever you feel like it. Need a great “Tuesday Night Wine” or an impressive but affordable wine to keep a large crowd happy? This is the one. Just 4,000 cases were produced for the vintage, but we’ve stocked up and anticipate that we can fill all orders. Stop by and pick some up, call us at 828.505.8588 or email us and we’ll set some aside for you as long as you pick it up within a week. Cheers and happy drinking and eating!
