545 Wine Tasting - Try 5 Wines For $5

What better way to start your week end in Asheville than by stopping by Table Wine anytime between 4 and 7 p.m. on Fridays to sample some great wines produced by the top family owned and operated wineries in the world. Business has been booming for us, and we’re very thankful for that as it allows us to keep our wine roster fresh and innovative. On Friday, June 29, we’ll open 5 new wines to the store to share with you giving you the opportunity to try before you buy. You can go to wine classes and/or read wine books forever, but the best way to learn about wine is to combine your wine studies with consistent wine tasting. We give you ample opportunity to do so and we look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

The cost for the tasting is just $5 or it’s free if you’re a Grape Nut. Below are the wines we will be trying this week:

1. 2010 Garciarevalo Verdejo “Tres Olmos” (Rueda, Spain) – For those unfamiliar with Verdejo, it is considered one of Spain’s top white wine grapes and production is focused in the region of Rueda in northwestern Spain. This is a very special wine from one of the top Verdejo producers in the country. The vines are anywhere from 100 to 140 years old and the wine is fermented in stainless steel with extended lees contact. The result is an intensely aromatic, nicely textured, juicy white wine with abundant notes of fresh pear, quince and melon along with more complex nuances of jasmine, mineral and baking spices.

2. 2009 Fontanavecchia Falanghina Taburno (Campania, Italy) – Falanghina is an ancient white wine variety that has thrived in the deep southern part of Italy for thousands of years. In the ancient world, it was the grape that was used to make Falernia which at the time was considered one of the greatest wines on the planet. It is still grown and it still makes a very delicious, slightly exotic wine with aromas and flavors of mineral, apricot, melon, pineapple and orange blossom.

3. 2009 Schug Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast, California) – Vintage 2009 was a very fine one for North Coast Pinot Noir, but there are very few 2009 Pinots left on the market, especially at affordable prices. Walter Schug has a great touch with Pinot Noir, and this one is textbook California Pinot with a super smooth, seamless texture and lovely ripe cherry and strawberry fruit along with complex notes of forest floor, spice and black tea.

4. 2009 The Winner’s Tank Shiraz (Langhorne Creek, Australia) – This is a big ole wine made in the style that Australia has become famous for. Grapes come from David and Cathy Knight’s estate vineyard in Langhorne Creek and the wine is dark and full bodied, but extremely soft and luscious. Ripe blueberry, plum and blackberry fruit team up with peppery spice to create the perfect red wine for grilled meats or for drinking all by itself.

5. 2007 William Hill Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley, California) – William Hill Cabs enjoyed a cult following back in the late 70’s and early 80’s, but then went through a spell of mediocrity for a number of years. Outside investment in 2005 got them back on track, and this might be one of the best value Cabs we stock at the store right now. From the nearly perfect 2007 vintage, this is classic Napa Cab with great body and structure. Black cherry, creme de cassis, cedar, spice box and vanilla all emerge from the glass of this full bodied, pleasure inducing red wine.
