Certainly not the most expensive, but one of the rarest cuvees Bonhomme puts out is their Les Pierres Blanches. The 2022 is seriously spectacular! This is only the third time I've ever gotten an allocation of this one, and I buy a ton of Bonhomme. This stuff rarely makes it out of France.
What makes it to the US stays in the Bay Area, where importer Charles Neal resides. He loves this one, and he puts it on by-the-glass at all of his neighborhood haunts. I had a little chat with him when he visited earlier this year, and he agreed that I deserved a little allocation of this golden nectar.
2022 Andre Bonhomme Vire Clesse ‘Les Pierres Blanches’
Incredible quality-to-price ratio in this heavenly White Burgundy!
Many of you know and love the wines of Andre Bonhomme, one of the most legendary estates of the Maconnais in Southern Burgundy. Their Chardonnays are known for their balance of ripe and rich fruit, super zesty acids, and complex mineral personalities.
Les Pierres Blanches delivers all of these attributes and more. From a plot of Chardonnay planted at over 1,000 feet in elevation, it is Bonhomme's highest vineyard, and it is always one of the last to be harvested. In addition to the long hang time this gives the grapes, the soils here are super rocky and limestone-rich.
It all adds up to a fabulous bottle of Chardonnay. Fermented in stainless steel, it sees a whopping 18 months of aging on the lees. Complex and alluring, this pours a golden color and offers up captivating aromas of caramelized white peach, pineapple, apricot, leesy spice, and intense mineral. Rich and concentrated yet zesty and high-toned, the yin effortlessly matches the yang in this one :)
Like all of Bonhomme's whites, this drinks wonderfully well now, but it's got a decade or more of cellar potential. Once you buy it and get it home, it's your call.
