2013 Precious Syrah – On Sale While Supplies Last


Importer and project manager Dan Phillips is still using that old vine Syrah vineyard in Jumilla for his fruit source and Chris Ringland (Alto Moncayo and Clio winemaker) is still making the wine.  It still sees 18-24 months in those roasty, toasty  used Pappy Van Winkle barrels, and upon breaking the seal on this screw cap enclosed bottle of wine, you can definitely detect that.  But it’s not just a big, fat oak bomb.  There’s also lovely, pure, perfectly ripened and dark Syrah fruit present to balance out that charred barrel nuance.

So what’s it like? If you haven’t figured it out yet, it’s pretty decadent.  My notes this year are pretty much the same as they were for the 2011.  As you might expect, it’s extremely rich, heady, full bodied and in your face.  The old vine fruit shines through with aromas and flavors of blueberry liqueur, blackberry, black cherry and peppery spice.  Then the Pappy barrels kick in!  Wood smoke, brown sugar, vanilla, and sweet spice frame all of that ripe and savory fruit very nicely.  At the end of the day, this wine is just pure pleasure, and it’s the perfect bottle for the whiskey and wine lover in your life.  Super full bodied and full flavored, but smooth and silky on the palate, this is probably about as close as most of us will get to Pappy van Winkle.
